Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts, and experiences the world. Signs often appear in early childhood and can vary widely from one child to another.

  • ASD affects social communication, play, and behavior patterns.

  • Early identification and intervention lead to better long-term outcomes.

  • ASD is not caused by parenting or environmental factors—it’s a neuro-developmental condition.

About the Screening Tools We Use

ASD Early Screening Tools

Your child’s screening is conducted using evidence-based tools recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP).

Examples of Tools:

  • M-CHAT-R/F: Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers – used for children 16–30 months.

  • STAT: Screening Tool for Autism in Toddlers and Young Children – for early behavioral signs.

  • SCQ: Social Communication Questionnaire – for children aged 4 and above.

  • RAADS-R / AQ: Used for adolescents and adults when applicable.

Why These Tools Matter:
These screenings are designed to identify early developmental differences, so families can access services and supports sooner. They do not diagnose autism—but help determine if a formal evaluation is recommended.

Understanding Screening Results

What do the results mean...

If Your Child Screened At-Risk or Positive:

  • This means your child showed some behaviors or responses associated with ASD.

  • A comprehensive diagnostic evaluation is recommended. TMCSCC will assist with connecting you to a licensed provider (psychologist, developmental pediatrician, or neurologist).

  • A Community Health Worker (CHW) may reach out to you to help schedule follow-up appointments and coordinate care.

  • You may also receive referrals to speech therapy, occupational therapy, or behavioral intervention programs.

If Your Child Screened Within Normal Range:

  • No immediate concerns were identified.

  • Continue regular well-child visits and developmental screenings at 9, 18, 24, and 30 months as recommended by the AAP.

  • If new concerns arise, rescreening is encouraged.

Regardless of the outcome, TMCSCC will provide care coordination to next best step for proper and timely management of your child's development.
